What Are Returned Stock?
Everything You Need to Know

Buyer's Guide 3rd Stock · Melbourne, Australia

Every day, thousands of products are returned to retailers across Australia — perfectly good items that can no longer be sold as brand new. That's where returned stock comes in. And that's exactly what we specialise in at 3rd Stock.

So, What Exactly Is Returned Stock?

Returned stock (also called returned goods, open-box stock, or ex-returns) refers to products that have been purchased by a customer and sent back to the retailer or supplier — for any number of reasons.

Crucially, "returned" doesn't mean "broken" or "used up." In most cases, the product is in perfectly fine condition. It may have been opened, tried once, or simply sent back because the buyer changed their mind. The product itself often has years of life left in it.

"Most returned products aren't defective — they're just looking for a new home. That's the opportunity we exist to fill."

Why Do Products Get Returned?

Returns happen for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with product quality:

  • Change of mindThe most common reason. A customer ordered something, it arrived, and they simply decided it wasn't for them.
  • Wrong size or colourCommon with furniture, homewares, and fitness equipment — the item looked different online.
  • Duplicate purchaseOrdered twice by mistake, or received as a gift they already owned.
  • Packaging damage in transitThe box arrived dented or scuffed — but the product inside is completely fine.
  • End-of-line surplusA retailer or supplier clears out old model stock to make room for new inventory.
  • Display or floor modelsUsed in showrooms or trade events, then cleared when the promotion ends.

What Happens to Returned Stock?

Here's the part most people don't realise: once a product is returned to a major retailer, it typically cannot go back on the shelf as new stock — even if it's in perfect condition. Australian consumer law and retailer policies make this very difficult.

So retailers and suppliers are left with a problem: warehouses filling up with returned, surplus, and open-box goods that can't be sold through their normal channels.

The options? Send it to landfill. Write it off as a loss. Or sell it to a specialist like us.

The Problem We Solve

1,000+ tonnes diverted from landfill every year

At 3rd Stock, we buy returned, surplus, and open-box goods directly from Australian suppliers, distributors, and wholesalers — and resell them to people who actually need them. Every item we sell is one less item heading to waste. Over 10 years of operation, that adds up to a meaningful difference.

Is Returned Stock the Same as Second-Hand?

This is probably the most common misconception — and it's worth clearing up.

Second-hand goods are products that have been genuinely used over time: an old couch someone sat on for five years, a bike ridden hundreds of kilometres, a TV that's been running for a decade.

Returned stock is different. The vast majority of what we sell has barely been touched — if at all. We think of it as a third category entirely:

1st
Brand new, sealed, full price
2nd
Second-hand, genuinely used over time
3rd
Returned, open-box, surplus — that's us

"Not brand new. Not second-hand. The third option."

How We Grade Our Stock

Because returned stock can vary in condition, we inspect every item and assign it one of two clear grades before it goes on sale. No guessing. No surprises.

Open Box

Unused, complete

Original packaging opened. The item itself is unused, with all original accessories and parts included. No signs of use whatsoever.

Returned

Installed or minor marks

Item has been installed, briefly tested, or has minor cosmetic marks. Fully functional. Specific condition is clearly described in every listing.

One thing worth knowing: because returned items are inspected, repacked, and shipped again, packaging may not be in its original pristine condition — and further handling can occasionally result in minor surface marks. We always flag this where relevant so you know exactly what to expect.

Common Myths About Returned Stock — Debunked

  • Myth: Returned stock is always faulty The vast majority of returns have nothing to do with product defects. Most items are returned due to change of mind, wrong colour, or packaging damage — not because anything is wrong with the product itself.
  • Myth: You don't get any warranty All items sold by 3rd Stock include a 12-month warranty. Returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase.
  • Myth: It's the same as buying second-hand As explained above, returned stock and second-hand are completely different categories. Most of our stock is unused or barely touched.
  • Myth: You can't trust the condition description We grade and describe every item honestly before listing. If something has a mark or imperfection, we say so. Our business depends on buyers trusting us — and we take that seriously.

Why Buy Returned Stock?

There are three good reasons to consider returned stock over buying new:

1. Significant savings

Because these products can't go back on the shelf as new, suppliers need to clear them quickly. That means genuine savings — often well below the recommended retail price — on products that are in excellent condition.

2. You're reducing waste

Every returned stock purchase is a vote against unnecessary waste. Instead of a perfectly functional product ending up in landfill, it goes to someone who actually needs it. That's a good outcome for everyone.

3. Same products, better price

We carry home & garden, pet supplies, fitness equipment, furniture, appliances, outdoor tools, and much more — all sourced directly from Australian suppliers. New stock arrives every single day, Monday to Saturday, so there's always something worth discovering.
